| Fee hikes loom for colleges, universities (Toronto Sun) Posted: 29 Mar 2010 02:13 PM PDT Ontario college and university tuition fees will be allowed to rise an average of 5% annually over the next two years, the provincial government has decided. College and University Minister John Milloy also has announced changes to the Ontario Student Assistance Program, including covering the cost of loan interest for the first six months after graduation. "We want students to focus on their studies, not how they are going to afford their groceries or pay their rent," Milloy said in a statement Monday to the Ontario Legislature. Nora Loreto of the Canadian Federation of Students said the tuition decision means Ontario college and university students will continue to pay more than in any other province. "It's a 5% increase on average every year for now six years," Loreto said. "Ontario's already the most expensive place to get a college or university designation and this just continues that trend." The maximum cost of a four-year undergraduate program will rise to $29,000 from $28,000, Loreto said. While students will welcome the six-month loan interest break, the other OSAP changes don't mean much for them, she said. "The biggest difference is that they'll be able to borrow more (money)," she said. Although post-secondary students are looking at two more years of above-inflation tuition hikes, Milloy suggested college and university educations are not moving out of the financial reach of Ontarians. About 120,000 students have entered the college and university systems since the province first implemented its tuition framework, Milloy said. "At the same time, we've seen the default rate for student loans at the lowest ever in Ontario's history," he said. "So I think it demonstrates the fact that we have a framework which has worked. It has allowed more students to come into the system." Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. Available tools: PDF Newspaper, Full Text RSS, Term Extraction. |
