State Rep. Alvin Holmes, D-Montgomery, has been invited to be the keynote speaker at the luncheon for the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities which will be held on the campus of Alabama A&M University, Huntsville, on Tuesday at noon.

President Barack Obama and Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan launched the program as a new relationship between historically black colleges and various federal agencies, according to a release by Holmes.

"Historically, black colleges and universities were created for a common purpose of educating African American students by giving students who might not have had an opportunity to receive a higher education," Holmes stated in a release.

"The contributions of these historically black colleges in the United States is undeniable."

Holmes stated that since the founding of the first historically black college, Cheney State University in 1837, to the present, the institutions of leaning have made great contributions.

"Because of the racial strides we have made today, many would argue that now that we live in integrated communities, these institutions of higher learning are no longer needed," Holmes stated.
